Digital technologies are changing the way businesses create value, organise work, serve customers and make decisions, and managers everywhere are under pressure to respond. This paper examines digital transformation and its impact on modern business management using secondary data from the National Payments Corporation of India, global consulting surveys and the academic literature. It first clarifies the concept of digital transformation and distinguishes it from the simple adoption of information technology. It then reviews the main enabling technologies, including cloud computing, analytics, artificial intelligence, the Internet of Things, blockchain and digital platforms, and discusses their influence on strategy, operations, marketing, human resource management, finance and decision-making. The paper uses the growth of the Unified Payments Interface in India as an illustration of the pace of digital adoption and reviews evidence on the outcomes of transformation programmes. The findings indicate that digital leaders achieve higher profitability and efficiency, but that a large majority of transformation efforts fall short of their targets because success depends on strategy, leadership, skills, culture and organisational redesign more than on technology alone. The paper concludes with recommendations for managers and suggestions for future research.
